Who is Bo?
When you turn your head to see Bo when he just got everyone’s attention, it was probably because he just told the funniest joke of the day or scored the winning basket in a tense basketball game. A tall, 12-year-old boy with an angular face and caramel-colored skin, my friend Bo has thin eyes and a firm jawline. Bo is one of the most athletic in grade 6 with a talent for long-distance running and basketball.
On the big assessment day for Humanities, everybody was very nervous. Even on my way to school on the bus, the usual laughing and shouting turns into whispers and murmurs. During the prep session before the test, the classroom was eerily silent as anxiety filled the air. Suddenly, Bo broke the ice: “I wanted to buy some camo pants yesterday but couldn’t find any.”. At first, it was just a snicker, then a chuckle, and finally, the whole class broke out laughing. After the teacher had us stop laughing, I realized Bo had just loosened up the whole atmosphere with his humor. That’s what real humor is.
Later in the semester on a hot summer night, Bo and I played in a basketball game against the strongest middle school team in the whole city. At half-time when we were down by 14 points, coach decided to put us in. My hands were sweating when I said, “I can’t mess up!” to myself. When I looked to Bo, he just calmly walked onto the court. I can’t believe he was so composed. After grabbing the ball from a long pass, Bo dribbled down the court with determination on his face. Jumping from the three-point line, Bo seemed to hang in the air as he flicked the ball high and straight into the hoop. That single play inspired us and let the team regain our momentum. During the last quarter, we needed a miracle to win. Bo took the ball and passed it to me, his eyes seemed to spell I trust you to win the game. At that moment, I knew we had won. I jumped into the air, focusing all my attention on the ball, and propelling it into the hoop. We won, What a game.
Reflection
Before this lesson, I thought I had already known everything about Bo. But after writing this essay, I realized I only scratched the tip of the iceberg. Only a few sentences in, I already learned so much more about him. I had never compared the two sides of Bo side by side, but this essay did just that and gave me a full view of Bo’s character.
When proof reading the essay, I thought my descriptions of the basketball game was really vivid. I thought I could have worked more on the humorous side of Bo, such as using better verbs and more description. One thing I found challenging was observing both sides of Bo and balancing them out in an essay, because I was used to his humorous side and never really got to experience the serious side until that basketball game. But with such strong impression left from that game, I knew I would have no trouble at all writing the rest of the essay.
Last but not least, I think one good piece of advice I would like to have is could you please help me on the ending of my first event. Because I thought that it was a bit bland and wasn’t that accurate for trying to convey a personality.
